Energy dissipation of vortex drop shaft is simulated by OpenFOAM to check if design of energy dissipation chamber is satisfactory.
Here are the key design parameters:
Design flow = 4.5m3/s
Diameter of drop shaft = 1.24m
Height of drop shaft = 6.16m
It is observed that water shoots out of energy dissipation chamber as its size is too small. Enlarging its size should give larger circulation zone to dissipate energy before flowing out of the chamber. Another simulation is therefore run to demonstrate effects of enlarging the energy dissipation chamber.
CFD is demonstrated as a design tool to identify design problems at early stage of the project.
