Tobacco is a major disruptor to the ecosystem – from its plastic materials and environmental toxins (aggravated by the fact that cigarette butts are the most littered item on earth) to production processes that lead to deforestation, a leading cause of greenhouse gas emissions.
Through its deceptive messaging, tobacco companies have perpetuated the problem by diverting attention from its environmental harms by participating in so-called CSR activities, shifting blame to consumers, and drowning out the voices of farmers and workers impacted by its environmental damages.
The Global Media Competition (GMC) is organized by the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control for STOP, a global tobacco industry watchdog. The GMC is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control as well as global and country partners.
