We went out birding two separate days. The first day was 20 degrees (-9C) with light snow. We saw just a few species; perhaps the rest were laying low to get through the cold.
The second day, though, was a treasure! 40 degrees (4C) in the dawn light, with birds everywhere! Two huge flocks of water birds, tons of birds foraging for food and flying in groups. You can watch the video to see the species, but that was really fun!
The question remains: is winter birding worth the trouble?
I think if you really like birds, choose a relatively warm day and a relatively short walk. Dress way warmer than you expect. And yeah, that might be worth the trouble to see some migrating/rare species.
I really like birds, but not cold. This was a good experiment, but I'm not going to spend a lot of time outside birding in the winter.
Let me know if you have any tricks to make winter birding easier and more fun, or if you have seen something really awesome in the winter!
