Bipropellant rockets can be highly complex and expensive machines, but with effort they can also be elegantly simple devices. With simplicity often comes affordability and reliability, as all unnecessary elements are removed from consideration. There's no doubt that when it comes to making liquid rocketry more accessible, The Half Cat team has the right idea. The ideas may not all be revolutionary per say, and many of the concepts involved have flown since before FAR, but few can claim to have executed it as well and as diligently as they have. I invite all who would say otherwise to prove it out in the field with my cameras as witness.
Their latest flight of the 2CAT/3 rocket, named in their signature fractional numbering scheme, reached an altitude of 7200 feet and returned safely. The rocket makes use of piston tanks and autogenous nitrous oxide to provide the oxygen and the pressurization necessary to launch it that high. While no longer students at the University of Central Florida, other students across the country may like to take inspiration from such a successful and accessible rocket system. To do so would align with their noble mission "to lower the barrier to entry for amateurs and students..."
Exercise extreme caution when handling Nitrous Oxide. We do not recommend handling it without adequate protection and consultation with experts. Though it may seem mundane, it is one of the most temperamental oxidizers we handle at FAR, and one which we do not allow people to be near when filling.
