Ukraine's exports of wheat, barley, and maize partially rebounded to 1.1 million tonnes in April from 300,000 tonnes in March as the war-raved country struggles to export its stores of grain by road, river, and rail to avoid a global food crisis.
Ukraine had a grain export capacity of 6 million tonnes per month before the Russian invasion, which started on February 24. The government currently aims for a partial recovery to 2 million tonnes, but to no avail, as the Russian blockade on the Ukrainian Black Sea ports persists.
The government also faces logistical hurdles, including a shortage of train wagons, fuel, and more. The Ukrainian authorities are targeting 700,000-750,000 tonnes of exports per month through two small ports on the Danube river to Romania, from where they would be forwarded to North Africa and Asia, with any surplus going by road and rail to Europe. However, over the first 22 days of May, only 28,000 tonnes were exported by road.
