Prab Prabhakar, MBBS, FRCPCH, Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, distinguishes between tension-type headaches and migraines in young people. He notes that migraine is associated with more severe pain, so a child seeking medical intervention is more likely to have a migraine than a tension-type headache. In contrast to adults, migraines in children are typically bilateral and of shorter duration. Dr Prabhakar recognizes that children may lack the vocabulary to report their symptoms accurately, so other methods should be used for diagnosis.
