In Ming Dynasty General Qi Ji-Guang's book on Shield fighting techniques, the fighters carried a Javelin with them.
They can throw the Javelin at the enemy Spearman, so that it creates an opportunity for them to rush in with their short swords.
But how did they carried the Javelin around with them, together with their Shields and Swords?
