Let’s find out more about this rare limited-edition timepiece
The Rolex King Midas.
Rolex has been known by setting standards in the world of watchmaking.
In 1964, Rolex introduced the heaviest gold watch of its day, it was also the most expensive Rolex of its time, Named after Greek mythology’s King Midas, who was famous for his ability to turn everything he touched into gold.
Designed by one of the greatest legendary watch designer in history, Gérald Charles Genta, a Swiss watchmaker and artist.
Genta, had plenty of hits to his name such as:
Omega’s Constellation (1959); Patek Philippe’s Golden Ellipse (1968). Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak (1970), IWC’s Ingenieur (1976); Patek Philippe’s Nautilus (1976); and Cartier’s Pasha de Cartier (1985).
The story of the Midas is a special one
, Genta wanted to deliver a different timepiece, one that would set new records but honor the royalty.
A Design Inspired By the Parthenon
The design of the Rolex King Midas draws its inspiration from the Parthenon temple of Athena in Greece.
If you place the watch on its side with the winding crown facing up, you will see the triangular tip resembles the temple roof, while the thick bracelet grooves represent the columns.
Featuring a manually-wound movement and an unconventional silhouette comprised of an asymmetrical case with a thick integrated bracelet, the King Midas watch was carved from a single block of 18k gold.
It’s also important to note that the crown is positioned on the left side of the case as a nod to King Midas because everything he touched with his left hand turned to gold
Just in case one might forget the name of the watch, the words “King” and “Midas” are engraved on the side of the case, flanking the saw-toothed winding crown.
At the center of the small square dial is the pair of hour and minute hands, accompanied by the Rolex crown and Greek letters spelling out the “ΜΙΔAΣ” (“Midas” in Greet letters) at 6 o’clock
The opulence and rarity of the timepiece with its extremely low profile was designed specifically to appeal to the extravagant few.
As if the King Midas from Rolex wasn’t extraordinary enough on its own, the box that was designed for it also exceeds all expectations. While most Rolex watches come in a green box with a light velvet inlay, the King Midas is presented in a box with a shape resembling an ancient Greek amphora.
The box for the King Midas is made of black wood with red embossing in the style of Greek paintings and reveals the stunning timepiece inside, nestled on red velvet. Even the carton has greek paintings on it.
