The beautiful Aegean Macedonia. This part of Macedonia is currently occupied by greece, and has been so since 1913. This was previous part of the United Macedonia, which would today consist of parts of the Republic of Macedonia, Aegean Macedonia in greece, and Pirin Macedonia in bulgaria. Small parts are in albania and southern serbia as well.
The Macedonians of the Aegean Region are denied their basic human rights by the greek government. They are not allowed to call themselves Macedonian, learn Macedonian, speak Macedonian, or even mention Macedonia, unless they are talking about something that is greek. During the greek civil war, over 30,000 ethnic Macedonian children were deported from Aegean Macedonia by greek authorities in order to try to ethnically cleanse the region, and bring in settlers from southern greece.
As part of the ethnic cleansing process, over 1,666 rivers, villages, towns, cities, mountains, and other geographical areas were renamed to remove the Macedonian names and install new greek ones, which would 'prove' the greekness of the newly conquered land.
To this day, over 300,000 Macedonians live in Aegean Macedonia, and still call themselves Macedonian. As these people struggle for their rights, we are reminded about the many struggles the Macedonian People have gone through over the centuries.
We are with you our Aegean Brothers - God Bless You!
