인공 각막으로 찾은 빛 각막 대체 첫 걸음
South Korea has developed an artificial retina.that's currently being tested to see whether it can help patients with vision problems.
Industry experts say the product could serve as an effective way to minimize retina transplant failure.
Cho Sung-min has the details.
This patient here, aged well over sixty, has lost vision in his left eye from a chronic immune disease.
Because his ability to see with his right eye has drastically debilitated, he decided to have an artificial retina implanted.
It replaces the retina with a thin, special plate that just looks like a contact lens.
The surgery turned out to be a success as the patient claims he can now see better than before.

"I can sense the light very well and see what's ahead of me despite being blurry, so it's been helpful when walking."
The artificial retina, currently undergoing trials on humans, has been developed by a company in South Korea and is designed mainly for patients of rare diseases who have low chances of seeing even when transplanted with a donated retina.
According to data, 12 million people worldwide are o waiting lists for retina donations due to a range of problems and impairments.
In Korea, a patient with a retina problem must wait an average of seven years before a donor is found.

"Those suffering Steven-Johnson syndrome or those who have failed retina transplant several times, those with too many veins in their retina, or those who were born innately without stem cells around their retina. Korea didn't have any option for these cases, so although it's at a clinical stage, there is still a possibility."
A total of 12 clinical trials are planned, and the two that have already been completed proved to be successful.
The maker of the retina says they ultimately plan to expand the use of their product for people with vision problems and serve as a new option for those with rare diseases.
