In this exercise about diffraction of light, we are going to describe the diffraction pattern observed on the screen, determine the expression of the linear width L of the central fringe in terms of the wavelength λ, the screen-slit distance D and the width of the slit a, and then calculate the value of a. More over, we are going to use the diffraction set-up in order to determine the diameter of a thin wire and to check whether the wire has a constant diameter. Finally, we are going to place the diffraction set-up in water in order to calculate the wavelength of the laser light in water and the refractive index of water.
