I'd arrived in London that morning on the Caledonian Sleeper and had a while before returning to the West Country, so I decided it was high time I tried out a run on a Stadler FLIRT (Fast Light Intercity & Regional Train) as I'd heard some excellent reports about how good they've been since they entered service in 2020.
Colchester and back seemed a fair test for these EMUs as I'd get 55 mins ride in each direction.
And as it turned out they were ideally suited to their brief. I found them comfortable, quick, and most importantly, very smooth and quiet on this run.
In addition, the trip gives us a chance to have a look at Liverpool Street station, which was built as the grand terminus of the Great Eastern Railway. Another of those great London termini that is worth a moment of anybody's time! I do not have time to dwell too long at Liverpool Street, but I urge you to read what Simon Jenkins has to say about this venerable old (and new in parts) station in the book "Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations".
