While it may look subtle, a sharp lateral movement like this in a go-kart can very easily crack a rib. In fact, most people I've raced with have cracked one at some point, but I've been pretty lucky. The seats are made of hard plastic with no padding because ideally you are supposed to wear a rib protector underneath your suit.
