The Tupolev Tu-22M (NATO reporting name: Backfire) is a supersonic, variable-sweep wing, long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber developed by the Soviet Union.
It first entered service in the 1970s and was used extensively by the Soviet Air Force and Navy. As of 2021, the Tu-22M is no longer in active service with the Russian Air Force, and has been replaced by more advanced aircraft such as the Tu-160 and Tu-95MS. However, some Tu-22Ms are still operated by other countries, such as Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
