Toronto Mayor John Tory announced on Tuesday that the city has been able to co-ordinate free temporary internet access for many vulnerable Torontonias during the pandemic, including residents in lower income neighbourhoods, seniors in long-term care homes and clients in many city-operated shelters in partnership with technology and telecommunication companies.
The first buildings will begin receiving the service early May.
Mayor Tory also announced that the city has distributed free mobile phones, SIM cards and data plans for eligible vulnerable residents through the partnership between the city and Telus Mobility for Good program, the Toronto Police Service, the United Way of Greater Toronto and other community service providers.
He said this will help residents stay connected during the time of the pandemic and to access mental health services.
Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, reported a total of 5,182 COVID-19 cases in Toronto, including 4,647 confirmed cases and 481 probable cases.
She also reported a total of 319 hospitalizations, including 109 cases in intensive care units.
The number of deaths reported on Tuesday was 305 deaths from COVID-19.
Chief Matthew Pegg Fire, chief & general manager of emergency management for the City of Toronto, reported that the city has sourced a delivery of 50,000 face shields, which are now being tested and evaluated before being placed into inventory.
He said that an additional 150,000 face shields are expected to arrive in the next two weeks.
