The wooden mound is made of vertically-oblique arranged wood logs up to 1 m long, in three layers. The mound is a mixture of broadleaved and evergreen trees. Then, this wooden hill is covered with straw, then with dirt, in order to limit oxygen access. Due to smoldering process, the wood turns into charcoal. The whole process takes between 14 to 20 day. It depends of winds, rain, and wood quality.
The skill of charcoal master is not to allow the mound to burn down. Because the wood is not the same, it happens that on side of the mound the wood is earlier smolded thus the straw and dirt collapse. Through this hole the oxygen can quickly flow in and if not paid attention the wood/charcoal mount can burn down totally.
After the charcoal master think that the charcoal is ready, they are collected into big iron case, also covered, not to allow charcoal to burn out. After charcoal is cooled down, it is ready to pack and transport to the clients.
Being all day in the smoke the charcoal master have professional diseases like those of smokers – lung problems.
