How to Overcome Guilt When Setting Boundaries / Here's the best way to overcome guilt when you're setting boundaries. You want to focus on empathy, not sympathy. Sympathy makes you want to do something to fix the problem. Empathy means that you can hold what someone else is feeling and understand what they're feeling, but not need to do anything about it.
The easy way to do this is instead of thinking, “What can I do to make this better” think, “What can I think to make this better? What can I think about right now that this person is strong that they're doing the best they can with the tools they have? That I'm strong that I don't need to jump in and save anyone? That it's healthy that I'm setting boundaries.”
