This is a replica of a chelys U-shaped lyre, known also as "Aegean portable symmetrical lyres".
Depictions of U-shaped lyres are among the oldest to be found, such as in the decoration of Hagia Triada Sarcophagus in Crete (dated between 1420-1380 B.C.), and in a wall painting at the Nestor Palace (1300-1200 B.C.), located at the kingdom of “sandy Pylos” in Greece (as described in Homer’s Odyssey), an important center in Mycenaean times.
LUTHIEROS U-shaped Lyre has 9-strings, and it is an ideal instrument for anyone willing to learn how to play the lyre, as many top-players and lyre instructors use lyres with 7 or more strings for their courses. With the use of harmonics and other advanced playing techniques, a 9-strings lyre can easily produce three to four full octaves, along with the sharps!
// Bringing Ancient Artifacts Back to Life
To handcraft premium ancient-replicas with a focus to the modern musician, you have to research a lot, analyze hundreds of ancient depictions, build a lot of prototypes, test them with great musicians, etc.
And all of these, to conclude to meaningful compromises that have to be made, that are both deeply justified and make sense in terms of usability/playability. All in all, our ultimate goal is to serve the modern musician and to bring ancient artifacts back to life as fully functional musical instruments.
