FUCHSIA GMT MASTER REF. 1675
In this video, we have a really nice example of the famous GMT Master ref. 1675 outfitted with a red and blue "Pepsi" bezel that has since changed to a striking fuchsia color.
This watch is fresh to market, coming to us directly from the original owner, who purchased the watch while he was a cadet at West Point. It even has the original USMA Cadet Store papers. However, the box has since been lost.
He wore this watch regularly, and it shows. But as you might already know, that just adds to the provenance and desirability of the watch as it has since picked up some nice signs of aging that you don’t see on a mint-condition luxury timepiece.
Interestingly, this also adds to the overall value of the watch for many collectors.
THE DIAL
Our example was produced around 1967, as we have gathered from the 1.6 million serial number.
It also happens to be one of the earliest examples of the matte dial ref. 1675 as it was released around the time that Rolex swapped the original gilt dial to matte.
The matte dial featured in our video is also known as a Mark 0.5 dial. It’s similar to the Mark I “long E” dial but has zinc sulfide lume used on previous gilt dials. It also has a smaller GMT hand.
Zinc sulfide looks slightly puffier than Tritium. It also has phosphorescence when exposed to UV light. However, it does not glow as bright or for as long as photo-reactive luminescent materials.
The lume on our example has aged to a desirable warm yellow hue with the hands featuring a similar patina.
It has the correct jump date with closed 6’s and hooked 7s.
THE BEZEL
While the original red and blue bezel is more commonly referred to as “Pepsi” because it resembles the popular soda, the example we have here has also taken on the moniker “Pink Panther” because the red insert has changed to more of a fuchsia color.
Overall, it has a slightly different aesthetic than traditional Pepsi GMTs. This Rolex is sure to turn heads in a room full of avid collectors.
OTHER FINE DETAILS
The watch remains in excellent condition. Features include a later-era Rolex USA replacement bracelet from 1976, automatic caliber 1575 Perpetual movement, 40mm Oyster case with 50 meters of water resistance, and an acrylic crystal. It does appear that our example has been polished at some point.
GMT MASTER 1675 HISTORY
Rolex produced reference 1675 from 1959 until around 1980. With its release, we started to see the iconic pilot’s watch slowly transform into the modern collection as we know it today because it introduced the series to the 40mm Oyster case and added crown guards.
During reference 1675’s production, we also saw a few different movements, including the calibers 1565 and 1575, the introduction of the hacking seconds feature, and a change in the size of the GMT hand. Depending on the year produced, the 4th hand will either be small or big. Additionally, the dial with either be gilt or matte and may or may not have a chapter ring.
Reference 1675 was also the first GMT Master to feature the distinction "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified" on the dial.
With this collection, you have your choice of either a two-tone or all-black bezel. Although we have to say the fuchsia example we have in stock is quite exceptional.
Reference 1675 was eventually replaced by ref. 16750 in 1981. With this GMT Master, we saw a newer caliber 3075 movement.
Overall, this GMT is quite the find.
