Azoospermia is a male infertility condition caused due to the absence of sperm. This condition does not have any symptoms. There are various reasons due to which a male may suffer from a lack of sperm in the semen. Some of the common causes of azoospermia are vasectomy, birth defects, hormonal imbalance, scarring and adhesions on reproductive tubes due to surgery, varicocele resulting from enlargement of veins in the scrotum.
As a fertility treatment option, the sperm is surgically extracted from the male testicles using TESA, PESA or Micros TESE. There are two types of azoospermia. In the obstructive azoospermia, the male produces sperms but it is not found in the semen. In the non-obstructive azoospermia, the male body does not produce sperms. Oligospermia is different from Azoospermia, in oligospermia the male has a very low sperm count.
In obstructive azoospermia, the male produces sperm but they are not found in semen. Sperms can be retrieved by surgical intervention and used for fertilization.
In non-obstructive azoospermia, the male body doesn't produce sperm. This condition requires assisted reproductive techniques to conceive a baby.
