Like in history, the Tianqi Emperor had a learning disability and no interest in state affairs except for carpentry. Being raised by his wet nurse, Madame Ke, he is attached to her and fully trusted her. Only to be betrayed by her and the Eunuch Wei Jingzhong who seized full power. The Empress was well educated and virtuous, she opposed Madame Ke and Wei Jingzhong on many occasions.
This show revolves around Zhang Zheng, who is a commander of the Secret Police group known as Jinyi Wei. He helps the young Emperor ascended to the throne. The Emperor looks up him as his older brother, even though they fell in love with the same girl known as Ye Min. A female thief named Tan Lan revolts against the court because of heavy tax that causes suffering to the people. Zhang Zheng later learns about the corruption of the court and grew closer to Tan Lan. .
