The working-class Smiths change their initially sunny views on World War I after the three boys of the family witness the harsh reality of trench warfare.
During World War I (1914–1918), Ireland was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, which entered the war in August 1914 as one of the Entente Powers, along with France, and the Russia. About 30,000 died serving in Irish regiments of the British forces, and about 49,400 died altogether.
