It frustrates me when teams don’t have a plan for pressure! Whether it’s built in answer for it or adjustments. But giving the quarterbacks answers for pressure, then the quarterback being aware of when pressure comes, what the pressure issues are and how to get the ball out of their hands.
This to me was the biggest issue that the Buffalo Bills had yesterday. This video, we are going to look at Josh Allen at the position. He has been a stud, been incredible for a number of years now. He has carried the team on his back. He didn’t play his best football game yesterday. It’s unfortunate. In those big moments he has been so good but yesterday, he was not at his best. One of the biggest reasons for that was because they didn’t have answers against pressure. Cincy didn’t do anything crazy but they bought a lot of pressure. Very seldom did Buffalo capitalize on it and attack them and make positive plays. So we are going to dive into the tape and I hope y’all always understand: none of these videos are attacking a person. It’s about attacking a problem. About hoping this video gets back to buffalo and they can readdress and challenge what they do offensively in terms of how they handle pressure so it can be a benefit moving forward. I hope the same for Josh. I am never here to criticize a player because it’s a very hard position to play. It is difficult and I have had plenty of games where I didn’t play very well either. It happens at this position but the goal is to always try to get better and find those things, people that are willing to help you get better and to challenge everything you have done, what you’re doing to see are there any flaws, are there things I can get better at? That’s always my hope here on QBConfidential. Whether I’m talking to the actual player, the teams, talking to other players, and coaches. My hope is that these videos help you to challenge what you’re doing to make sure that you are crossing every T and dotting every I whether you have the ball or you’re calling/designing plays from the sideline.
Unfortunately it was one of those games for Josh. He just didn’t have his A-game. He wasn’t seeing the field, whatever the reason was. Unfortunately, it was in a big game/ moment. The guy on the other side, Joe Burrow, played really well and did the little things right. He didn’t try and force it, got the check downs. Got positive plays over and over again. It was the difference in the game. You saw at the beginning of this: to me, it was all about handling pressure. Through most of the game, the Buffalo Bills did not handle the pressure very well. Whether they had the answers or if it was Josh not seeing it at times. Whatever it was, they didn’t handle the pressure very well. Again, I point out the Bills because it was a big game yesterday and it cost them. But this is something I see around the league on a weekly basis. It’s the struggles to handle pressure. The lack of giving a quarterback answers or adjustments or quick throws with all the different pressure you see in this day and age in this game. There are a lot of teams that have to get better at it. But when you see it in a moment like this and you see it, not just once or twice, but when you see it 6, 7, 8 times in a game, you have to go back and ask the question: “what are we doing? How can we adjust? How can we do this better so we never let something like this happen again?” #nfl #buffalobills #bengals
