A stress fracture is a small fracture or hairline crack in the bone. Stress fractures can occur due to athletelic or overuse injuries. It may go undetected.
This is an example of a 23 year old athlete who suffered sports related injury. The patient was experiencing pain and tenderness in the middle distal third of the leg, however the initl x-rays were negative.
A bone scan was ordered to detect any possible abnormalities or stress fractures of the bones of the lower leg. An area of bone fracture or repair showed up as a “bright” or hot spot. In this patient, the bone scan revelaed the presence of a hot spot at the fibula.
X-rays ordered after obtaining the bone scan showed a fractures of the fibula which is barely visible on x-ray.
Stress fracture of the fibula is rare and is usually treated by restrivtion of the activity. the stress fracture has properly healed. When
