Saint Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, in 1181, at Assisi in Umbria. One of the most venerated religious figures in Roman Catholic history, founded the Franciscan orders, including the Poor Clares and the lay Third Order. He died on October 3, 1226, in Assisi, Italy.
