The scheduled execution of Joseph Roger O'Dell III in Richmond, Virginia on Wednesday has caught the attention of the Italian media and Pope John Paul II. Italians, many of whom oppose capital punishment, have joined the Vatican in asking that the Governor of Virginia George Allen spare O'Dell's life.
On Monday (21/7) dozens of Italians held a vigil outside the US embassy in Rome to protest against his execution.
