What's it like being a plastic surgeon? That's a super loaded question but let's go into the different things that make up the job.

Let's start with a few things that I love about being a plastic surgeon. I love that I get to work with a variety of ages of patients. There's a ton of diversity and I get to do cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
Also, it really is nice that many of the procedures we perform are elective and they fall in the cash pay side of surgeries. This allows us to make sure we're paid without having to fight with Insurance carriers in order to be paid. Is this why I do what I do, not even close. It is a nice perk, though.
The biggest thing to me is that I get to help people wake up every day and help people look and feel like their best. We all want to get up and feel great about ourselves. When we feel good, we are able to show up as our best selves and perform better in our relationships, our jobs, and anything else we take on! After receiving a Rhinoplasty when I was 24, I know that first hand.
Let's talk a little about the part of plastic surgery that doesn't get talked about much, though. Most people don't understand how much reconstructive surgery we do. No one talks about having to perform surgeries on burn victims, breast cancer patients, and other reconstructive surgeries that come with the tragic events in people's lives. I've had young patients in their 20's, 30's, and 40's pass away from breast cancer. It's not an easy thing to deal with and definitely takes a toll on you. Knowing that you can also be someone who positively impacts their lives in one of those hard times is incredibly rewarding, though!
One this that I tell all pre-med students is this; If money is your motivation in medicine, pick something else! If you want to make an impact on someone's life and you want to help people, becoming a doctor can be a great way to accomplish that. When you're doing things for the right reasons, the financial side will come and people will gravitate towards you.
