Two wildfires burning near Ruidoso, N.M., killed at least one person and damaged an estimated 1,400 structures — including approximately 500 homes, according to reports.
Melissa Fesmire and her son Christopher Bright have lived at least 14 years in Ruidoso, and they say the fires burning through the New Mexico village are like nothing they've seen before.
Christopher told Reuters on Wednesday that the sound of planes and sirens and the constant smell of smoke made him feel like being "in the middle of a war zone."
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham told media on Thursday that there will be an additional 200 to 300 firefighting personnel dispatched to aid in extinguishing the blazes.
The entire village of Ruidoso (population 7,000) was evacuated, officials added.
