After spinal fusion surgery your spine is more stabilized than before. Before there was an instability, now because of the fixation device it is more stable. Hence there is no need for prolonged rest. Rest is only for few days because of the incision or cutting of muscles, there will be soreness of the lower back, so you have to take rest for about 10 days. After that you have to get into activities. So you have to do proper exercises for lower back. Proper walking is also required we have to be active. in future we have to avoid excessive weight lifting because we have stabilized 1 segment or two segments so that is stable. Nothing will happen for that segment but degeneration can happen in the adjacent level. suppose if we have fused at L3- 4 level or L5,S1 level, and are under slightly more stress than before that is why degeneration can set in these discs. So you need to do proper exercises for the rest of the life. Otherwise you can do routine jobs other than excessive weight lifting.
