Boris Johnson has defended his decision to prorogue parliament, suggesting it has helped the UK's negotiating stance by showing the EU it is serious about leaving the bloc with or without a deal on 31 October. The prime minister said: ‘I’m afraid that the more our friends and partners think Brexit could be stopped, that the UK could be kept in by parliament, the less likely they are to give us the deal that we need’
