Welcome to D’n’A Ventures today we are hiking through Bristlecone Pine trees on Mount Evans in Colorado. Join us as we adventure into the Mt. Goliath Natural Area which protects North America’s northernmost stand of Bristlecone pine trees. Climb into the alpine and explore some of the oldest trees on planet Earth. The oldest Bristlecone pine still standing in the world today is almost 5,000 years old. These trees are highly resilient and thrive in the harsh conditions of the subalpine, living on dry south facing slopes over 11,500 ft. In elevation. The Mt. Goliath Natural Area is performing some very important work conserving these ancient conifers due to the fact that Bristlecone pines have a very low reproductive rate, short growing seasons and rarely can they grow successfully in conditions most other plants grow and live in. Today’s hike is only 2.8 miles long however, we are starting at an elevation of 11,540 ft. And will continue to climb to 12,152 ft. In elevation. The weather patterns at these heights can change quickly and storms can become quite dangerous, please plan accordingly. Living and growing at such extreme heights the Bristlecone pine has developed some unique adaptations to ensure its survival. Bristlecone pines have twisted trunks composed of narrow growth rings and super dense wood enabling the tree to withstand harsh winds, heavy snow loads and remain very insect and disease resistant. The Bristlecone also has very flexible branches so they have have a tendency to bend rather than break. Starting from the Mt. Goliath Natural Area one also has an option to hike the Pesman Trail, which allows one to climb out of tree line and experience open alpine tundra. D’n’A Ventures high recommends taking this trail as it will enable you to not only get a much closer look at this large Bristlecone pine stand but will allow you to gain exposure to rare plant and animal ecosystems of the alpine tundra. The Pesman trail is an additional 1.4 miles long with 592 ft in elevation gain. The Pesman trail climb takes you up to a pull off along the Mount Evans Scenic byway called the garden loop which offers 360 degree views of endless mountains and alpine tundra, it's worth the climb. Mount Evans Scenic byway and the Mt. Goliath Natural Area visitor center close in the late fall, winter and early spring due to the harsh conditions present at such a high altitude, make sure the roads are open before starting your adventure.
