The first contingent of Kenyan police officers departed for Haiti to combat rising criminal gang violence. Kenyan President William Ruto held a ceremony on June 24, wishing luck to 400 officers who left for Haiti as part of a United Nations-backed initiative. Kenya volunteered in July 2023 to lead an international force to tackle violence in the Caribbean nation, where gangs control most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and have carried out widespread killings, kidnappings, and sexual violence.
