Mozart's Die Zauberflöte is always a favourite among operas, its magic weaving through not just the plot, but the music. In David McVicar's wonderful staging for The Royal Opera, the comedy and pathos, the twists of the plot and the strong characterizations all combine beautifully, while John Macfarlane's elegantly dark designs heighten the Enlightenment symbolism of a thoughtful and evocative interpretation.
