The Curtiss C-46 Commando, a remarkable twin-engine transport aircraft that played a crucial role during World War II. The Curtiss C46 originated from the Curtiss CW20 pressurized high-altitude airliner design.

Early reports referred to it as the Condor III, but by early 1942 - the name “Commando” was officially adopted.The prototype, designed in 1937 by George A. Page Jr., aimed to compete with the Douglas DC-4 and Boeing 307 Stratoliner.

The innovative “figure-eight” fuselage design allowed it to withstand pressure differentials at high altitudes. Unlike its four-engine competitors, the C-46 featured twin engines, resulting in lower operating costs and a simpler structure!

The Commando primarily served as a cargo aircraft during WWII, with fold-down seating for military transport and paratroop delivery. The United States Army Air Forces deployed it extensively, while the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps used it under the designation R5C. Approximately 3200 planes were produced, compared to around 10200 C47 Skytrains, its Douglas-built counterpart!

After WWII, surplus C46's briefly operated as passenger airliners. However, the surplus C47s dominated the market. The C-46 continued in U.S. Air Force service until 1968, albeit in a secondary role. Remarkably, some C46 still operate today as rugged cargo transports in remote and arctic locations! the Curtiss C-46 Commando’s legacy as a reliable workhorse endures, even into the 21st century.
