At the Needles, on Alum Bay, a monument was erected to mark the significance of an experiment. With the support of the British Post Office, a 23-year-old Guglielmo Marconi and collaborators operated a wireless telegraph station that exchanged radio messages first with a tugboat in Alum Bay, then with Bournemouth 14 miles away, Poole 18 miles away and later with ships 40 miles out at sea.
This was the first time in Earth’s history that a message was sent wirelessly across the sea.
