On the afternoon of Monday, May 20, Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies rescued a 1-year-old child locked in a vehicle with the engine off and windows closed in a Walmart parking lot in Palm Coast. The FCSO Communications Center received a 9-1-1 call at 5:05 p.m. about the incident. Deputies and a Palm Coast Fire Department engine were dispatched, and Deputy First Class Finn and Deputy Harrison arrived first. They found the child, who had been locked in the car for 8-10 minutes, sweating and distressed due to the heat. Deputy Harrison broke a rear window, cleared the glass, and unlocked the vehicle, allowing the child to be assessed by PCFD and determined to be okay. Sheriff Rick Staly emphasized the dangers of leaving children in parked cars, especially in the heat.
