Can people accidentally reveal the spiritual reality? Where is the spiritual reality? How can we sense the spiritual reality? What is the most effective method of revealing and attaining spirituality? How can the right environment help us attain spirituality? What is the most important element of the right environment?
Throughout human history, there have been several well-known people who started speaking and writing about a spiritual reality they had discovered. A group of unique scientists - kabbalists - also claim that they have discovered a spiritual reality. Moreover, they also claim that anybody else can reveal this reality, unknown and unfelt for most of us by default. Kabbalists go as far as noting that we all have to attain spirituality, as that is the only reason we exist in this world for.
Chaim Vital - 16th century Kabbalist wrote a striking and emotional account of his breakthrough sensations when acquiring the perception of spiritual reality. But what he describes, is it just a fleeting sensation some people are lucky enough to experience? Is it a permanent state of mind and emotions?
For example, the person who opened up his spiritual perception as a result of inhumane and intolerable physical suffering in the Gulag later forgot his spiritual attainment when the physical suffering stopped. How could such a profound emotional and intellectual transformation disappear?
According to Kabbalists, that hidden spiritual world these special people were able to reveal - even momentarily - is the first original and actual reality, which gradually became concealed more and more. It became concealed because our desire - our actual essence - constantly grew. This growing desire has concealed the spiritual reality to such a point that we do not even remember that it exists, and we do not even remember how to get back to it.
This is why we need the method of Kabbalah. The physical world we sense around ourselves right now is being depicted as the product of our broken egoistic desires that are constantly emerging in us, creating the feeling of the consistency of this physical reality.
There are 2 ways we can rise above our broken, selfish, and egoistic desires in order to come out into that “Upper World” where we exist beyond our own desires - in the desires of others, “beyond our skin”.
We can reach this either through such inhumane and intolerable physical suffering where physical life becomes so painful and horrific that we simply want to be “outside of ourselves”. And when we are pushed out of this “black bubble” that our egoistic desires create, we find spiritual reality.
The problem with this “method” is that it is very unpleasant, and usually, it is temporary as the moment the ego feels better “outside” of the suffering physical body, it takes control again, drawing us back into this illusory physical reality. So we sink back into our original, egoistic nature, where we think exclusively about ourselves.
As a result, that sensation of spiritual reality disappears until even its memory disappears. Thus we sense ourselves back in this “animal world”, knowing nothing about the spiritual reality. The moment the intolerable physical suffering stops, we immediately and automatically return to the sole sensation of our present, egotistic and limited perception of reality we consider the physical world.
There is an alternative way of coming out of ourselves without the need to feel horrendous physical suffering. In the right environment, we create such stimuli that make me want to exit myself and exist beyond “my skin” - in the desires of others.
And the reason we want to do so is that there is something exalted; there is something worth chasing. We can reveal the meaning of life, the purpose of our existence, and the spiritual world.
And all we need for this is to create a unique environment around us that gives us constant impressions of the importance of spiritual reality. Such an environment can provide us with the importance of reaching that “Upper Reality”, which we call the Creator.
The first step might be accidental, like those we discussed before. But as our egoistic desires continue to grow, those motivating stimuli also have to grow and become more and more impressive and inspirational. We need them to provide constant inspiration to motivate us to get out of ourselves into that “Upper World”.
This constant inspiration can be provided by Kabbalistic books, different recordings, or video clips. But when our growing desire becomes so great that books, recordings, or video clips are not strong enough any longer, we need the most powerful motivation - the connection to other people.
We need the unique and closed environment of other people who are also on the same path and who can constantly advertise to me the importance of reaching spirituality.
