Alexander Pushkin, often hailed as the greatest Russian poet and the founder of modern Russian literature, was a towering figure in the literary world. Born on June 6, 1799, in Moscow, Pushkin was part of the Russian nobility but was deeply influenced by his maternal great-grandfather, an African prince named Abram Petrovich Gannibal. Pushkin's works, which include poetry, plays, novels, and short stories, blend Western European culture with Russian folklore, history, and ethics. His most famous works, such as the epic poem "Eugene Onegin" and the drama "Boris Godunov," showcase his skill in using the Russian language innovatively. His writings not only reflected the social and political climate of early 19th-century Russia but also significantly influenced the Russian language and its literary future. Tragically, his life was cut short at the age of 37 after he was mortally wounded in a duel, a fate that was both romantic and melancholic, much like the characters he created in his works.
