General waste from the whole MidCoast local government area is delivered to one of MidCoast Council’s licensed landfills, located at Taree, Gloucester and Stroud.
Regional growth and waste from natural disasters have contributed to the Taree landfill site nearing capacity. To provide landfill capacity for the next 7 to 10 years a new ‘landfill cell’ was approved in 2019.
Stage one of the Taree landfill extension included:
• the preparation of an existing quarry,
• installation of a leachate collection system,
• preparation of stockpile areas,
• trimming and grading cell floor and walls,
• completing a subbase,
• supplying and installing a liner including all seaming and welding.
Stage one of the extension is complete.
Stage two will deliver a liner extension to enhance the storage capacity of this landfill cell.
This multi-million-dollar project is funded by Council’s waste fund, which is supported by fees at waste management centres. The Taree landfill cell extension is budgeted to cost $6,500,000 for stages one and two.
