I got a cheap accordion from craigslist, so you don't have to. In this video, we take a closer look at the accordion to see how to evaluate it for purchase.
Buying accordions from Craigslist of Facebook Marketplace might look like a very affordable option. If you don't do your research, you will most likely be unhappy with your purchase. The local marketplace will be flooded with very old entry level models from brands like Scandalli, Excelsior, Sonola, Petosa, Guerrini, Paolo Soprani, Borsini, Hohner, Weltmeister, Giulietti, Italo American, Tonaveri, Morbidoni etc. While each brand has its own reputation, most of these student level models from the 50s are not going to be in great condition (if there was no maintenance done). You might be able to save a lot of money compared to a purchase from a dealer. Instead of buying a good playable accordion for $1000 from a reliable dealer, you will be spending $200 on junk.
Occasionally, you might come across some really good accordions from someone who has taken great care of their instrument. After watching this video, you should know a little bit more about how you can tell the difference between such desirable instruments and ones that have been lying in the attic for 60 years.
