Ven Pongal/ Khara pongal/ Milagu ( pepper) Pongal is a famous Breakfast recipe in south India. It’s served with Traditional Sambar and coconut chutney. It’s too easy to prepare. I have provided the steps to prepare with or without pressure cooker. I have prepared it without pressure cooker. This Pongal is my husband’s favourite food. Enjoy the recipe 😊
Ingredients:

Raw Rice- 1 cup
Moong dal- 1/2 cup
Ghee- 2 tbsp
Pepper corn- 1 tsp
Cumin seeds- 1 tsp
Green chillies- 3
Ginger- 1 inch
Cashew nuts
Salt
Preparation:

Take 1 cup raw rice in a bowl, add 1/2 cup moong dal wash it with water nicely and keep it aside.
In a Heated Pan, add 2 tbsp ghee, once ghee is melted add 1 tsp pepper corn, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 3 finely chopped green chillies,1 inch finely chopped ginger & saute well.
Instead of boiling rice/moong dal and finally doing the sauteing process this method of doing the sauteing first & adding the rice later will give good taste as the masala gets blend to rice & dal nicely.
Once the chillies & ginger sauteed well, add the washed rice/dal to this & saute well for 2 minutes without adding water.
While you are doing this sauteing, make hot water in another vessel. As we have took 1 cup rice & 1/2 cup dal, 5 cups water need to be added. So make 5 cups boiled water in another vessel & mix with this.
Add required amount of salt & mix it well. Once its started boiling well close the lid and maintain high flame for initial 5 mins & maintain low flame for next 15 mins. Open the lid & mix it using spatula 2 times in the middle.
If you are using pressure cooker, After initial boiling close the lid and leave it till 2 or 3 whistles. its depends upon your cooker specifications.
As i have cooked in normal pan, after 20 mins cooking pongal is ready. I have mixed it twice using spatula in between 20 mins cooking.
If you are using 5 cups water ,then only the pongal will be soft. Mash it slightly using the spatula. Finally fry some cashews in 1 tsp ghee and mix it with this. Delicious Pongal is ready.
