On March 27, 1984, Detective Michael Raburn was stabbed with a sword while responding to a mentally ill man at Yesler Terrace in Seattle.
Rayburn, who was a detective with the King County Sheriff’s Office, tried to serve an eviction on the man, Robert Baldwin. Rayburn was stabbed with a sword when the door opened. Rayburn returned fire, and Baldwin barricaded himself inside the apartment.
After a 17-hour standoff, Baldwin was shot by Seattle police.
Rayburn, who was survived by his wife, worked 12 years with the Sheriff’s Office. The agency’s Southwest Precinct in Maple Valley is named for him and Detective Sam Hicks, who was killed in 1982.
