I can capture the shadow of my subject making it the focus of my photograph.
Shadows can enhance a photograph in a number of ways. In some cases, photographers use shadows as a subtle, accentuating detail. With shadow art, the focus is placed on the subject as it blocks light from reaching a surface, like a sidewalk or table. Shadows, strengthen the photo by adding a sense of balance and contrast to the composition. Taking your camera out with the intention of capturing shadows in photography is a great way to seek and see the lights and darks within your photos. Experiment with the angle, distance and size of your light source to alter the intensity and scale of your shadows. Use people and pets as subjects, and inanimate objects, too, like musical instruments, buildings and action figures.

Black & White
Black and white photography is all about playing with only black, white, and shades in-between, always emphasize the contrast in the photos you take. When taking a photo, think about how it will look like in black and white. Black and white photography removes any distraction of color and helps the viewer focus on other aspects of the photo, such as the subject, the textures, shapes and patterns, and the composition. So, you can use all the same composition techniques – like the rule of thirds – that you’d use in color photography. As you’re shooting, think in terms of contrast — the difference between the light and dark tones in the scene. One of the most important things you can do in your quest for great black and white images is to train your eye to look for shadows, patterns, textures, and lines. As a photographer, you should be looking for these things anyway, but it’s especially important in black and white photography.
