Climate change, urbanisation and population growth are causing water availability and safety issues in cities around the world. Of all natural hazards, flood and drought affected the most people between 2000 and 2019. Around 1.65 billion people were impacted by floods and 1.43 billion by drought.
However, there is something that cities can do to save lives, improve urban resilience, and slash flood and drought-related damages. By taking urgent action and implementing readily available solutions, such as water permeability and flood protection, improving water-system efficiency and incorporating climate risk into urban planning, cities can protect their residents, improve urban resilience and drastically cut costs associated with urban damages.
