A Sheriff's Office Commendation may be awarded to a member of the Sheriff's Office for an outstanding act or achievement that brings credit to the department. The act or achievement should involve performance above and beyond their basic assignment.
On July 6, 2019, Parole & Probation Officer Tana Titus was driving to our CSAP residential facility.
She was turning onto the 32nd Avenue bridge from Johnson Creek Boulevard when she saw a troubling sight.
A man was standing on the other side of the bridge railing.
He looked like he was going to jump off the bridge onto the Springwater Trail below. A second man was trying to talk to him.
Tana pulled over to see if she could help.
What followed was a masterful negotiation.
Tana engaged the man in conversation. She got him to talk about the problems that had led him to the bridge. She got him to sit instead of stand at the bridge railing.
With his permission, she put her hand on his back to comfort him.
Tana was promising to call his therapist when Milwaukie PD showed up. The man suddenly became agitated. He tried to stand up.
Tana kept a grip on the man's shirt. She put one hand around his body and pulled him off balance so he couldn't jump. At that point, Milwaukie PD took over.
Tana's quick thinking and calm negotiation very likely saved this man's life. We're honored to present her with our Sheriff's Office Commendation.
