These are the 4 different legal ways an F1 student can opt for jobs in the US.
First & foremost, apply for a Social Security Number which is mandatory for all students working in the US.
1. On-campus employment
Refers to the jobs at locations on the campus that are educationally affiliated.
Working hours:
20 hours per week when the classes are in session.
Students can work full time during vacation periods and holidays
2. Off-campus Employment
Only available for those who have:
Completed at least one full academic year.
An emergent circumstance.
A qualifying economic hardship.
Working hours are still 20 hours per week
3. CPT/Curricular Practical Training
Refers to internships or workshops with any other partnering employer.
No weekly work hour limit.
If you complete one year or more of full-time CPT, you will be ineligible for OPT
4. OPT/Optional Practical Training
Temporary employment opportunity which is related to your educational program.
Students can only work for combined 12 months under OPT.
