In storm conditions that saw some residents using a sledge and huskies to move around, dedicated medical workers left their cars and journeyed to work on foot. Paco and Monica, two nurses, reportedly walked 22 kilometres to their hospital. And a doctor, Alvaro Sanchez, on social media claimed to have trekked the 17-kilometre distance to work on foot.
The Spanish Health Minister tweeted: ‘The commitment that the entire group of health workers is showing, is an example of solidarity and affection.’
In many parts of Spain, residents were warned to take care as temperatures were predicted to fall to -12 degrees centigrade over the next few days.
