World War I Argonne Battle Action Film is an American war drama and tells the terrifying true story of the US 77th Division's Lost Battalion during World War I. The story, which takes place in the Argonne Forest in 1918 during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, follows Major Whittlesey and about 550 soldiers as they become isolated and encircled by German forces.
Major General Robert Alexander initially regards Whittlesey as a "overeducated New York lawyer" and his soldiers as "acceptable losses," but Whittlesey proceeds with his diverse collection of soldiers—mostly working-class men and immigrants from New York City's Lower East Side—into combat. They find that the American and French armies have abandoned them, leaving them surrounded and under siege, as they break past the German defenses.
Whittlesey and his troops refuse to surrender in the face of constant attacks and running out of resources, even to the point of reusing medical supplies and scavenging from slain friends. Whittlesey and his soldiers gain the respect of their enemies by refusing to back down in the face of German captives' pleas for them to give up.
An American pilot spots their position and launches a rescue operation after they have been holding the line for days against insurmountable odds. The pilot, hit by German fire and critically injured, still communicates the position of the Lost Battalion before passing away. The Germans withdraw as reinforcements show up, breaking the siege.
