I come up with pretty much all my riffs on the QWERTY keyboard, but often the riff I'm hearing in my head falls off the end of the 15-key range on Ableton's QWERTY keyboard and I cannot use the Z and X keys to jump between octaves in the middle of playing a riff. The free MidiKeyboard from pizmidi expands the piano range to 32 keys on your QWERTY keyboard. Just install it as a VST then route your synth to take MIDI from the MidiKeyboard. To record as you play, record-enable both the MidiKeyboard track and the synth track at the same time.

The one you see in the video that I'm playing on my Windows laptop is the MidiKeyboard from the download file "pizjuce plugins VST/Win64". There are also versions available for Mac, though I haven't tested those. You need to install the whole folder with all the plugins and then remove any plugins you don't want (there are also drum pad plugins and so on in there that you may or may not want). Big thanks to pizmidi, whoever they are.
