Mabry Mill was originally built by Edwin Boston Mabry (1867-1936). He began it in 1903 initially as a wheelwright and blacksmith shop, and eventually it became a saw mill and by then 1905 a gristmill. The gristmill was operated by Mr. Mabry until the 1930s.
Now, Mabry Mill is one of the most photographed places in the United States, not to mention one of the most popular attractions on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mill is run by the National Park Service, and along the grounds are walking trails with live exhibits during the summer and fall months which reflect various aspects of the pioneer mountain lifestyle. Exhibitors dress in the attire of the times. Demonstrations on local crafts, music, dancing, shoe making, soap making, running a whiskey still will have the visitor feel like they have just stepped back into time.
At the historic, operational water-powered grist mill visitors can see a demonstration of the milling process and can even purchase ground grits, buckwheat flour and cornmeal to take home. Of course, the preferred method is to enjoy these local delicacies prepared by the experts at the Mabry Mill Restaurant.
However, as interesting as it is to see how this pioneer milling process worked, it is probably the serene beauty of the mill location that draws people to this stop. Each year several hundred thousand visitors come to photograph the beautifully restored mill which sits by a picturesque pond and is framed by mountain foliage. Resident ducks add their touch to the soothing scene. It is no wonder that Mabry Mill shows up in more tourist photo remembrances that any other parkway destination.
A trip to Mabry Mill offers many intriguing exhibits that are sure to entertain visitors of all ages. Before leaving, be sure to visit Mabry Mills gift store to find that treasured handmade mountain craft.
